Samuel and the Little People
Arnold James Isbister

This is the story of the origins of the Little People, Up-See-So Ai-See-Neh-Suk, as told in the journal of Samuel White Wolf.

Isbister found White Wolf’s journal among his grandfather’s things and thought to bring the Little People to life with these stories. People say they are fiction, myth, only real in ancient legends, but as a child, Arnold had experiences with them, and he wanted to know more about them.

Not everyone can see the Up-See-So Ai-See-Neh-Suk because they only show themselves to those they see as honoured friends. In Samuel’s case, they favoured him for the stories he told. A tiny person, to whom he gave the name Napaysis, meaning “Little Man” in Cree, became a close and dear friend.

I decided to bring Samuel’s journal to light, transcribing them from Cree syllabics into English. I hope his life experiences enrich your life and help you to believe there is more…much more…to our (sometimes) mundane lives than we think, here in the physical realm.
